Shouting, booing, flag-waving and emotional testimony filled a hearing on a proposal to declare Bellingham a sanctuary city for AWOL soldiers.
A group of Western Washington University students persuaded the council to hold the hearing because they say military deserters should not be jailed for disagreeing with the Iraq war.
Although the council sponsored Monday night’s meeting, no members plan to introduce a sanctuary resolution.
