Wednesday's Prep Roundup: Burlington-Edison's Brownell claims third state golf title

TUMWATER - Burlington-Edison High School boys' golfer Wyatt Brownell claimed his third consecutive Class 2A state title Wednesday.

The senior had a two-day total of 134 (69-65) at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.

Brownell finished 11 strokes in front of the runner-up.

"Three consecutive state championships is an incredible achievement, and it didn't happen by accident," Burlington-Edison coach Tito Vivanco said. "Wyatt built his game to this level through years of commitment, sacrifice, and trust in the process.

"His success was earned through countless hours of hard work that most people never see, and I couldn't be happier to see it all pay off for him. Even with all of his success, he's remained humble, respectful, and a great representative of Burlington-Edison athletics."

Brownell is the only boys' golfer in Skagit County history to have won more than one state title, and among all county high school golfers only Sedro-Woolley's Kelli Kamimura won more.

Kamimura won four girls' titles from 1995 to 1998.

On Wednesday, Burlington-Edison's Logan Arendse finished in a tie for 24th with a two-round total 157 (77-80).

For the second consecutive year, Burlington-Edison placed fourth.

Also at the tournament, Anacortes' Vance Frerichs finished in a three-way tie for 12th at 151 (75-76), while teammate Dex Hong tied for 17th at 161 (80-81).

The Seahawks finished sixth overall.

Class 3A State Championships

SPOKANE - Sedro-Woolley's Riley Friebel tied for 23rd at Indian Canyon Golf Course with a two-day total 145 (69-76).

Class 2B State Championships

LIBERTY LAKE - Mount Vernon Christian claimed the team title as all three Hurricanes finished in the top 10 at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Owen Carlson finished in a three-way tie for second after a two-day total 155 (80-75).

Carlson finished seventh a year ago.

Seth Rowland finished fifth at 156 (76-80), and Joshua Toner finished in a tie for sixth at 161 (79-81).

"What stood out most was how calm and consistent they stayed under pressure," Mount Vernon Christian coach Collin VanderArk said. "Owen's even-par back nine on the final day, especially draining that 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to close it out, was one of those moments you don't forget."

Mount Vernon Christian had 51.5 points to claim the team title, edging runner-up Orcas Island by a half point as the Vikings finished with 51 points.

"After coming up just short against a great Orcas Island team last year, these players used that as fuel to take our program to the next level," VanderArk said. "Five years ago, Jeremy McCullough, Michael Pedrosa, and I restarted the golf program with big dreams. Watching these young men work so hard to make those dreams reality has been incredibly rewarding."
