Hospitals should be required to publicly report how many of their patients develop infections during their hospital stay.
House Bill 1106, sponsored by Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Roy, requires reporting of infections. His bill passed out of the House of Representatives with a strong, bipartisan vote of 86-10.
The state Senate should adopt House Bill 1106 so consumers can compare infection rates as they weigh one hospital against another. Having rates public also will prompt hospitals to put systems in place to reduce the number of infections.
