Letter of the Month for March

Yelm Highway is a speedway

Psssst. Hey, city of Lacey and Thurston County traffic enforcement. Y’all wanna rake in some revenue? NASCAR has arrived on Yelm Highway.

Now don’t tell anyone I told you, but if you station yourselves at Yelm Highway and Boulevard Road, you will see what I mean.

I have been commuting on Yelm Highway for many years, and one recent morning around 7:30 a.m., I let a car merge in front of me, which, on a good day, does not cause any sudden brake checks or skids to a stop. People will cut you off with half a car length of space to do it.

Anyway, as this car was starting to merge left into my lane, the car behind it swerved around that car on the right side and into the bicycle lane to pass it. At that point I had seen it all. It scared me because there are bicycle commuters, city transit commuters and school children waiting for their school buses.

I recall seeing a police car at that intersection for a day or two, and I was grateful because it actually made me feel safer knowing it was there.

I just wanted law enforcement to be aware that when it comes to the morning commute on Yelm Highway, there are no rules and obviously no speed limit. The checkered flag waves at 8 a.m. Thank you for your attention and consideration.
