It’s ironic that Olympia, a progressive city hosting three institutions of higher learning, has such a vocal element which chooses to ignore or reject enlightened scientific works of its finest scientists. Close-minded attitudes seem more common in less progressive populations. Harlan Bretz (Missoula Floods), Charles Darwin, and thousands of other scientists and their works were rejected by those believing unproven but commonly accepted answers. The new ideas threatened the establishment.
Noted environmentalist Dr. David Milne, PhD, has unintentionally threatened the establishment. He has determined that water quality of a managed Capitol Lake is far superior to that of an intertidal mudflat. His findings based on 40 years of analysis contradict many of the untested claims of the state agency-tribal duo which demands a mudflat.
Milne wasn’t originally an advocate for any particular management plan. He’s an objective environmental scientist offering unbiased observations and rational conclusions regarding water quality and habitat.
Milne came to this issue after recognizing that the CLAMP decision system was hopelessly biased toward a mudflat and allowed the public and its leaders to be misinformed. He recognized that the condition of Capitol Lake was grossly mischaracterized as were the significant ecological benefits of lakes - Capitol Lake in particular. He was disturbed that the decision making system had become a political one, not one based on science.
One would hope that the duo would have welcomed Milne’s unrivaled expertise for collaboration. Instead, they have made numerous moves to stonewall and discredit him. Our community deserves better.
