Social Security, was the creation of the New Deal-era Democrats. The Medicare program to protect our elderly came from the Dems under LBJ. The ACA would have added the next tier of protection and access if the GOP hadn’t gutted it from the start (thanks, Mitch).
Despite their ‘free market’ mantra, Republicans blocked attempts to let Medicare bargain for lower drug prices (as the VA does), thus appeasing their Pharma donors. Now the Senate’s new bill ends Medicaid as we know it, making around $1 trillion in cuts to this vital program and it aims to eliminate Medicare over time. With 84 percent of Americans opposed to any cuts to Medicaid, and with Medicare serving the elderly and this nation for 50 years, the GOP says the poor, deserving, needy be damned as “we want a more austere approach” coupled with huge tax cuts for those with immeasurable wealth already.
I add that banking regulations like Glass-Steagall created by the Democrats in the 1930s to end the ‘caveat emptor’ GOP policies of the 1920s, which helped cause the Great Depression, have been the target of elimination by the GOP since Reagan, (even after the 2008 crash). Clearly history shows this party in power is no friend of the common person, Red or Blue. As for health care, I ask this GOP Congress and president: why can’t we all have your health care plan that we pay for? Or, shouldn’t you have the same plan you pass for us?
