I would like second letter writer David Milne's call for attention to population control.
Such influential persons as Martin Rees, former president of Britain’s Royal Society, warned in the June 2010 issue of Science Magazine, that relative to population control, “We’ve now entered a unique century, the first in the 45 million centuries of Earth’s history, in which one species – ours – could determine, for good or ill, the entire planet’s future.”
My concern for this overarching problem led me to write a book entitled, “Evolution and Future of Mankind” in which I present a discovery and a warning. My discovery: the connection between the controversial subject of evolution and our propensity for excess population which, as Dr. Rees cautioned, is the greatest threat facing mankind. My warning comes regarding our population. We have two choices: Control our population ourselves by adopting well known population control techniques, or let resource exhaustion do it for us. The latter will, of course, not be pleasant.
It must be emphasized that these are our only choices. Neither technology nor the supernatural being we call God can prevent a disaster which only we can and must prevent.
