I would like to bring to the attention of the public something that happened on Dec. 18th.
The East Olympia Fire Department, which is about 97 percent volunteer, along with Puget Sound Blood Center, put on a new blood drive. This was at a time of year when blood donations were down because of the holidays and from the snow storm at Thanksgiving which stopped a lot of donations, so it was critical to get people out to donate.
For a first-time drive this was very successful. And on top of that a full 50 percent of the donors were first-timers.
The volunteers from the department as well as others in the East Olympia community came out on a Saturday giving up their time to help others. At times, it seems the only things we read in the paper are bad things and complaints.
I am a volunteer at both the East Olympia Fire Department and the Puget Sound Blood Center, and because of this I know a lot of other volunteers who are giving their time to help the community.
I just want to express a huge appreciation to all these people and to all who give blood.
