Child care center has a caring staff

I am deeply saddened to read the reports regarding the Westside Olympia Early Learning Center and the issues with a former employee who abused a child off-site.

I am particularly saddened because every day I see how hard the employees work to care for the children.

My son has attended the downtown OELC for 31/2 years and has been happy there since his first day. When we walk in the building, he runs to his room and gives his teachers and his friends hugs. Then he’s off to discover what the activities for the day are.

The staff work hard with the children to prepare them for kindergarten, as well as to help the children discover science, arts, creative play, reading and writing. Additionally, the children go on many field trips, from exploring downtown Olympia on foot to going to the Hands On Children’s Museum and fire stations.

Many (around 70 percent) of the children attending OELC are from families who struggle financially. These children are getting wonderful, loving, enriching care that they might not be able to get elsewhere.

I have seen how much the negative publicity regarding the former employee has hurt the staff. They care about the children they spend so much time, energy and love on. I hope they know how much we parents appreciate their hard work.

I also hope anyone looking for quality childcare will disregard the abominable actions of one person and consider OELC for the fine work they do with children.
