Speaking out against our anti-women culture

Hobby Lobby still covers vasectomies and erectile dysfunction medications, which is not only a blatant double standard, but evidence that we live in a patriarchal society that encourages men to be in charge of their sexuality and shames women who try to do the same and when that doesn’t work they take away our rights.

Hobby Lobby is a small reflection of a larger culture that treats women as second-class citizens. A society where women are harassed in the streets and told it’s a compliment, where school dress codes are established to create an environment so “boys don’t get distracted,” and where 700 laws were proposed to regulate a woman’s body in 2013 alone.

A society where Caucasian women make 77 cents, African American women make 64 cents, and Latinas make 55 cents for every man’s dollar. In a society where 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence and every 2 minutes someone is sexually assaulted.

When we speak out against Hobby Lobby, we are really speaking out against a culture that encourages systematic inequality, double standards, misogyny, sexism and oppression against women. You can take away a woman’s healthcare, her inability to feel safe walking home at night and pay her less for the same job, but we will not be silenced.
