Questions for restaurants that affect patrons’ health

Thank you to The Olympian for publishing the restaurant inspection scores of local eateries. While the restaurants’ physical spaces need to be attended to, as consumers it is important to consider the health and well being of the workers who touch, prepare and serve our food.

Some questions to consider: 1. Do the restaurant workers receive paid sick days, or are they expected to work while ill? 2. Do workers receive health benefits, a living wage, over-time pay and all their tips?

Answers to these questions can have serious health implications for both workers and consumers. As consumers we should expect restaurants to meet inspection codes and to treat workers fairly, providing a living wage and enforcing labor laws.
