The League of Women Voters of Thurston County has been carefully monitoring the movement towards a home rule charter in Thurston County. We are on record favoring home rule in principle, as it is a form of county government that would provide equitable representation for residents of all parts of the county and fiscal efficiency for the taxpayer. This position was last updated after a study by our League in 2010.
Our league, however, has taken no position on the current county charter effort, as we require far more details. We see our current role as being neutral on the issue but taking a lead informing our membership, and the public, about the pros and cons of county charter government. We are working toward presenting a series of forums to this end. We will remain neutral until we are persuaded that the proposal on the table fulfills the criteria we specified in our 2010 study, and we can make a considered judgment about whether this is the right time for such a change, given the county’s current fiscal challenges.
Several citizens, including non-league members, have publicly noted that the LWVTC has adopted a position favoring charter government with the insinuation that we fully support present efforts. We are looking forward to continued programs and discussions about the future of Thurston County government, and plan to be involved as this undertaking progresses. Thank you for allowing us to clarify our stance on the Better Thurston movement.
