The Seattle Police Department can ill afford any more bad publicity. The elderly black gentleman, William Wingate, a 70-year-old retired Metro driver, who was using his golf club as an assistive device (defined as a cane or walker used to assist ambulation) was doing nothing wrong. He claimed he never swung the club, which he was using as a cane, at the police officer, Cynthia Whitlatch, countering her subsequent claims that he did so earlier a block away. She never mentions this in the police car cam video when she aggressively accosts him for having the golf club in his possession.
The supposed police cam documenting Wingate’s “aggressive” action is never produced at Wingate’s court proceeding. It is clear in the video before her aggressive encounter with him that the gentleman was using the golf club reasonably as an assistive device. It is curious that this police officer had subsequently posted Facebook commentary on the Ferguson situation which could be interpreted as racist.
