Olympia gives too much to those who are homeless

I commend Laurie Davis for her letter about the homeless taking over downtown. It was brave of her to write that. I know many people who, in private, say exactly what she did, but they won’t say it publicly because they’re afraid of being labeled unfeeling, selfish and cruel. Olympia does far more than its fair share, and we’re taking care of homeless people who come from out of state—many states away.

It’s our responsibility to take care of our own homeless. It’s not our responsibility to take care of California’s homeless, Colorado’s homeless, Mississippi’s homeless, etc. If you want to know where the homeless in downtown come from, ask an Olympia fire fighter or police officer. They can tell you.

Homeless advocates may say that Olympia needs to do more. The fact is, we’re doing too much. Just look at downtown.
