* Saturday: Enjoy spring wildflowers while you pull scotch broom during a Nature Conservancy work party at the Thurston County Glacial Heritage Preserve. The work party starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.

Volunteers should bring a lunch and water.

* Saturday and Sunday: Halibut season is open in South Sound (Marine Area 13) Fishing is allowed Thursdays through Mondays, and there is a one-fish daily limit. Hood Canal is closed to halibut fishing because of low dissolved oxygen.

* Sunday: The Race for the Roses half marathon and 5K races start at 7 a.m. at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.

Every runner gets a T-shirt, and all finishers get medals and roses. Register online at www.race4theroses.org or call 503-262-0174.
