The National Wildlife Federation is urging families to join its fifth annual Great American Backyard Campout on June 27.
The campout is part of the federation’s Be Out There campaign, which encourages American families to spend time in nature every day.
Proponents say that for the first time in American history, an entire generation will come of age primarily indoors, according to a federation news release. Studies link lack of unstructured playtime outside to increased childhood obesity, less self-sufficiency and reduced creativity. President Barack Obama showed his commitment to outdoor time by declaring June Great Outdoors Month.
