Get to know Mount St. Helens' history

The Mount St. Helens 2009 Field Seminar Series continues Saturday with a program on Spirit Lake.

“Spirit Lake – Life Before the Eruption” will be led by Christine Colasurdo, who first camped at Spirit Lake in 1970 as a child. Her family’s cabin near the lake was destroyed in the May 1980 eruption. Colasurdo is the author of two books, including “Return to Spirit Lake.” She has created three exhibits about Mount St. Helens and is at work on a second book about Mount St. Helens’ changing landscape.

During the event, participants will learn about the lake’s spooky history, from the time of the native Cowlitz up until 1979. Learn about Sasquatch and the early prospectors, campers and climbers who explored the area before the eruption.
