As people head out for the holiday weekend, public agencies are reminding the public to be aware of any fire restrictions. Because of the warm weather, vegetation is drying out and fires can ignite quickly.
As of late June, there have been more than 230 wildfires on the public and private lands the department protects from wildfire – well above the average number of fires at this point in the fire season, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. In addition, people cause 85 percent of Washington’s wildfires, said an agency news release.
To check for fire danger and outdoor burning restrictions by county, see the state burn risk map at: fortress.wa.gov/dnr/firedanger or go to www.dnr.wa.gov. Click on “fire information and prevention” and go to “wildfire related maps.” The link to the burn risk map is in the bottom right-hand corner. You also can call 1-800-323-BURN (2876).
