Weekend Getaway: Snowboarders hit the slopes

What: If you are stoked after watching the action from the Vancouver Winter Olympics, check out RIDE Shakedown, a snowboard event featuring professional and amateur riders. Competitors must compete in Big Air and rail obstacle events. Among the pros scheduled to take part are Seattle’s own Austin Hironaka; Darrell Mathes; teen phenom and twotime Shakedown champion Seb Toutant; Hana Beaman, who won Shakedown’s first women’s edition last year; and Leanne Pelosi.

When: Today, competition starting at 10 a.m., and Saturday, competition starting at 2 p.m.

Where: Summit West

Getting there: From the South Sound, take Interstate 5 north, then state Route 18 east. Take Interstate 90 east and get off at Exit 52. History: The event has been held for nine years in Canada. This is the first time the event has come to the United States.

Cost: Free for spectators

Also: There will be an autograph session with the pros at noon Saturday. The event concludes both nights with an afterparty at the Hard Rock Café Seattle; $15 at the door, 21 and older.
