It has been a rough winter for visitation at Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks. The number of recreational visits over the first two months at each park was down about 20 percent.
At Mount Rainier, there were 20,023 recreational visits in February, down 28.1 percent from the same month in 2010. For the year, the park has seen 41,180 recreational visits. That is down 22.7 percent from the 53,269 people who visited the park the first two months last year.
The news wasn’t much better at Olympic National Park. February’s visitation last month was 68,228, down 21.9 percent from February 2010. For the year, recreational visits have totaled 149,441. That’s down 18.2 percent from 182,734 visits to start 2010.
Winter visits are North Cascades National Park are minimal at best. Four people were recorded as visiting the park proper in February, and nine people have visited the first two months.
