That is the number of adult spring chinook counted at Bonneville Dam through March 23, the highest count since 2003. In 2003, a record 8,259 fish had been counted in the same time frame, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. The count also is the 13th largest since at least 1939. The estimated 972 adult spring chinook caught and kept by sport anglers through March 22 is nearly nine times higher than the same time last year (109 fish kept).
