Fans don't boo Miss Iowa's pitch

Miss Iowa Katherine Connors threw out the ceremonial first toss before Friday's game between the Phillies and the Nationals in Washington.

Her catcher: Nationals reliever Miguel Batista, a former Seattle Mariner (2007-09) who recently made a comment about Miss Iowa as part of a self-effacing joke.

“I love it. I think it’s hilarious,” Connors said.

Wearing a red Nationals jersey and a Miss Iowa sash, the right-handed Connors heaved a pitch high and outside to Batista.

Batista created an unintentional furor Tuesday night when he replaced injured star Stephen Strasburg at the last minute. Most of the 40,000 fans booed when the change was announced.

“Imagine,” Batista said after the game, “if you go there to see Miss Universe, and you end up having Miss Iowa – you might get those kind of boos.”

Batista has been invited by organizers of the Miss Iowa USA pageant to be a judge.
