Cardinals get help at third base

The St. Louis Cardinals got some help at third base Thursday, acquiring Pedro Feliz from the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher David Carpenter.

The Cardinals also placed catcher Jason LaRue on the 60-day disabled list. LaRue sustained a concussion in a fracas with the Reds earlier this month.

Felix started for the Phillies’ 2008 World Series team, and has played 97 games for the Astros while batting .221 with four homers and 31 RBI.


Braves left-hander Eric O’Flaherty will come off the 15-day disabled list after a bout of mononucleosis and will be in the bullpen for today’s game at the Chicago Cubs.

O’Flaherty, a graduate of Walla Walla High School, was a sixth-round pick by the Mariners in 2003 and pitched for Seattle from 2006-08.

Rookie left-hander Mike Dunn was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett .

O’Flaherty is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 41 games.


Phillies slugger Ryan Howard will start a rehab assignment today with the club’s Single-A affiliate with the Lakewood BlueClaws. The All-Star first baseman has been sidelined with a sprained left ankle since Aug. 2. ... Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia, the 2008 AL MVP, was scratched from the lineup for Thursday ’s game against the Angels because of a sore left foot. The Red Sox also placed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the disabled list with an infection in his right leg. Saltalamacchia went to the hospital before Wednesday’s game complaining of soreness. ... Royals pitcher Gil Meche will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Omaha against Memphis. The No. 22 overall pick in 1996 by the Mariners, in the fourth season of a $55 million contract, is on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury. He opted not to have season-ending surgery.
