Blizzard strands Giants in K.C.

The New York Giants must be tired of traveling to Minnesota by now.

The Vikings and Giants were supposed to play today for the ninth time in the last 10 regular seasons, a scheduling quirk that has slated seven of those meetings – this year is three in a row – for Minneapolis.

With more than a foot of blowing snow falling in the Twin Cities area Saturday, the Giants’ charter flight was forced to land in Kansas City, Mo., instead, and the game was pushed back to Monday night.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the decision in an e-mail message Saturday night, with the Twin Cities under 15 or more inches of snow and the Giants stranded in Kansas City.

The game will start at 5 p.m. – ahead of the Ravens-Texans Monday Night Football game at 5:30 – and will not be televised.

The delay gives Vikings quarterback Brett Favre another day to heal. Favre is aiming to make his 298th straight start, with a sprained shoulder that makes throwing difficult.

CHARLES’ BIG DEAL

Running back Jamaal Charles has signed a new contract with the Chiefs, a league source told The Kansas City Star.

ESPN.com reported Saturday that the new deal is for five years and $32.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed.

Charles leads the Chiefs with 1,137 rushing yards and leads the NFL at 6.2 yards per carry, bolstering the Chiefs’ No. 1-ranked rushing offense, which averages 175.2 yards per game. Charles, who will turn 24 on Dec. 27, is in his third NFL season.
