2010 record/finish: 88-74, second place
Manager: Ozzie Guillen (eighth season)
Key additions: DH Adam Dunn, RHP Jesse Crain, LHP Will Ohman
Key losses: RHP Bobby Jenks, RHP Freddy Garcia, DH Manny Ramirez
Outlook: It certainly won’t be dull on the south side of Chicago this season. With Guillen as your manager, it never is. The White Sox will rely on the oft-injured Jake Peavy to give depth to a starting rotation with question marks, including the erratic Edwin Jackson. The addition of Adam Dunn brings another home run hitter to a team full of them.
Player to watch: LHP Matt Thornton. The hard throwing lefty will take over as the closer after the much-awaited departure of Bobby Jenks. Thornton has been dominant as a set-up man, but being Guillen’s closer comes with plenty of criticism and pressure.
Will win the Central if ... the starting pitching can be decent. That means Jackson will have to throw strikes and Peavy will have to stay healthy – things that haven’t happened much the past few seasons.
