2A football: Tumwater racks up 473 yards of offense in first-round win over Fife

TUMWATER -- Noah Andrews, in his second start at quarterback, did well calling his own number when selecting plays.

He did OK handing the ball off, too, as top-ranked Tumwater rang up 473 yards on the ground Friday night in a 42-24 victory over Fife in a first-round Class 2A state championship game at Tumwater District Stadium.

The Thunderbirds took two plays from scrimmage to put points on the board when Andrews broke out of a logjam and into the clear on a 65-yard touchdown run.

Fife’s CJ Polo cruised 91 yards on the kickoff return after the T-Bird’s score, but the Trojans had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Omar Murillo.

Still in the first half, Tumwater’s Griffin Shea took a handoff at wingback, got a block from teammate Tyrus Snow, and sprinted down the right sideline on a 77-yard scoring run.

The junior Shea next gathered in a pass from Andrews in stride for a 79-yard scoring play to make it 21-3.

A strip of a Fife ballcarrier by Thunderbirds safety Brogen Lesh set up a two-yard run by Ian Saner to make it 28-3 at halftime.

Tumwater’s defense, led by Lesh, Devon Shedd-Kirkland and free safety Andrews, limited Fife’s offense to 110 yards in the first half.

Trevor Davis returned the second-half kickoff 50 yards, and Snow made it 35-3 with a five-yard TD run.

Fife quarterback Kyle Mozzone had a 67-yard scoring run to make it 35-10. Saner got his second TD for Tumwater on a 28-yard run to make it 42-10.

The Trojans hung around, getting late scores of six and one yards from Tanner Knapp (13 rushes, 57 yards) to close the scoring.

Shea finished with 266 total yards on 10 carries, including 123 yards on only four rushes in the first half. Andrews had 8 carries for 122 yards.

Tumwater (11-0) advances to a home game next weekend against Squalicum, a winner over Orting on Friday. Fife finished its season 7-3.

Sedro-Woolley 41, W.F. West 0: The Cubs' 41-point win over the 2A Evergreen Conference runners-up sends them to the 2A state quarterfinals where they'll face Burlington-Edison next weekend. W.F. West loss ends its season at 6-4.
