Pacific Lutheran baseball wins opener at Division III South Regionals

Pacific Lutheran survived making five errors — Emory helped by making four miscues — as the second-seeded Lutes rallied for a 9-6 win over the No. 5 seed Eagles in the NCAA Division III South Regional baseball game Wednesday.

The 31-12 Lutes face No. 3 Birmingham-Southern (35-10-1) on Thursday.

PLU overcame deficits of 3-0, 5-3 and 6-5 against the Eagles, the national runner-up last season. Emory scored three runs in the top of the first (with the help of three PLU errors) and two more in the top of the third.

“Well, we didn’t start the way we wanted, but it’s very characteristic of our team to battle back,” PLU coach Geoff Loomis said. “We showed great resiliency in that win.”

Designated hitter Tanner Williams, a White River High graduate, had four RBIs and third baseman Tyler Thompson hit a solo homer for the Lutes.

PLU scored four runs — three unearned — in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Garrett Brown allowed one unearned run and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.
