Saints' Poole named GNAC player of year

Saint Martin's senior center Blake Poole has been voted the player of the year for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in men's basketball.

Poole finished the regular season as the GNAC’s top rebounder with 11.8 per game and was fourth in scoring at 19.2 points a game. He was sixth in steals (1.6 spg), eighth in blocked shots (0.7 bpg) and ninth in field-goal percentage (55.0).

Poole is No. 2 on the conference’s career rebound list (1,099) and is 10th in career scoring (1,740).

Jeremy Green, who received honorable mention, was the only other SMU men’s player recognized.

In the closest race for player of the year in GNAC history, Poole edged Central Washington guard Jamar Berry and Alaska Fairbanks forward Parrish West. West led the conference in scoring with 27.2 points a game. All three received three first-place votes, but Poole had the most total points.

Central Washington’s Greg Sparling and Northwest Nazarene’s Tim Hills were named co-coaches of the year.

In women’s basketball, Saint Martin’s Dara Zack was named first-team allconference. She was the only Saint recognized. Zack averaged 15.3 points and 6.6 rebounds a game and is the Saints’ all-time leader in points and rebounds.
