Teen could set LPGA record with victory

Teenager Alexis Thompson shot a 5-under 67 in breezy conditions in Mobile, Ala., to earn a share of the lead after three rounds of Avnet LPGA Classic.

If she holds off South Korea’s Song-Hee Kim today, Thompson will break the LPGA record for youngest winner. Marlene Hagge was 18 years, 14 days when she won the 1952 Sarasota Open, an 18-hole event. Paula Creamer was the youngest winner of a multi-round event, winning the 2005 Sybase Classic at 18 years, 9 months, 17 days. Thompson will be 16 years, 2 months, 21 days old today.

Bubba Watson made a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 2-under 70 and a share of third-round lead with Webb Simpson (67) in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Former Braves pitcher John Smoltz missed the cut by 27 strokes with a 15-over 87 at the South Georgia Classic in his Nationwide Tour debut.
