Tumwater girls roll, remain undefeated

BREMERTON - Despite a slow start, Tumwater remained unbeaten after its 70-42 non-league girls basketball victory over Olympic on Wednesday night.

Tumwater coach Dave Littleton said his team got its rhythm going halfway through the first quarter, when the defense started to take over the game.

“We extended our defense and kept the pressure up,” Littleton said. “That’s what opened up the game.”

The Thunderbirds (8-0) had four players in double figures in scoring – Katie Bergquist and Mackenzie Cooper each had a team-best 13 points, followed by Taylor Weiks’ 12 and Jordyn Richardson’s 10.

“They share the ball really well,” Littleton said. “They look for the open player.”

Tumwater, which has scored 62 points or more in each of its past six games, resumes Class 2A Evergreen Conference play Jan. 4 against Aberdeen.

Anacortes 55, North Thurston 39: The Rams lost their second game in as many nights, falling to Anacortes at the Santa Slam Tournament in Oak Harbor.

Chelsey Kindle had nine points for North Thurston, and Catie Mets added eight.

Tumwater spread the offense around, and all but one player scored.

“The guys are taught to make plays if they have the opportunity,” Tumwater coach Curtis Medved said. “It was a quality win. Everybody contributed.”

The T-Birds and Tornados were tied, 30-30, at halftime. Tumwater turned up its offense in the second half, scoring 46 points.

Yelm guard Jonas Chambers had a season-high 33 points.

Tumwater plays Timberline at 5:15 p.m. today.
