Red Sox sign Scutaro to fill void at shortstop

The Boston Red Sox are hoping Marco Scutaro is the solution at shortstop, at least for two years.

After cycling through seven shortsto ps since the middle of the 2004 season, the Red Sox announced on Friday that they have given Scutaro a two-year deal with a club option for 2012.

Scutaro hit career highs with a .282 average, 12 homers and 60 RBI for Toronto last year. Scutaro will replace Alex Gonzalez, who left the Red Sox after the team declined his $6 million option and signed with the Blue Jays.

Short hops

Right-hander Brad Penny and infielder Juan Uribe have turned down one-year contract offers to return to the San Francisco Giants. … Catcher Gregg Zaun and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a $2.15 million, one-year contract.
