Rainiers game suspended in fifth inning, will resume Thursday

The Tacoma Rainiers are playing well, but their momentum was put on hold by nature on Wednesday night.

The third game of the Tacoma-Salt Lake series was suspended due to rain in the middle of the fifth inning, with the score tied at 2. It will be continued at 3:35 p.m. (PDT) Thursday, with the regularly scheduled game — shortened to seven innings — to follow.

“It was right for the umpires to call for the tarp at that time,” said Rainiers manager Pat Listach. “It was wet. We were ready to keep playing, but it was the right call.”

Tacoma scored in the top of the first inning, when James Jones singled to lead off the game against Salt Lake starter Andrew Heaney. Jones went to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Stefen Romero’s single to center.

The Rainiers added another run in the fourth on Ketel Marte’s two-out single, which brought home Shawn O’Malley. Marte had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Salt Lake tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Roger Kieschnick powered a two-run homer with two outs against Tacoma starter Justin Germano.

Heaney escaped a jam during a steady downpour in the top of the fifth, and the umpires called for the tarp.

Considered the top prospect in the Angels farm system, Heaney allowed two runs (one earned) on 10 hits over five innings pitched. He threw 102 pitches.

A streak ended when Jones was caught stealing third base by Salt Lake catcher Jett Bandy to end the top of the fourth inning. Jones had 30 straight stolen bases between Seattle (23) and Tacoma (seven) — he had not been thrown out since May 28, 2014 by then-Angels catcher Hank Conger.

Tacoma added relief pitcher Andrew Kittredge to the roster for the second time this season. The University of Washington product opened the season in extended spring training before joining the Rainiers in late April. He pitched two scoreless innings at Sacramento on April 26, then was transferred to Double-A Jackson for nine days before returning to Tacoma on Wednesday.

The suspended game will be resumed at 3:35 p.m. (pitchers TBA). In the regularly scheduled game , Tacoma is scheduled to start Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 4.00 ERA) against Salt Lake’s Zach Stewart (1-2, 4.80).
