MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Zach Randolph had 23 points and 20 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies ruined Dirk Nowitzki's abbreviated return with an 89-70 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.
Darrell Arthur finished with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and Rudy Gay added 16 as the Grizzlies won their fifth game in the last seven.
Nowitzki, Dallas’ leading scorer with 24.1 points per game, returned after missing nine games with a sprained right knee. But he managed only seven points before being ejected in the third quarter as the Mavs were held to their lowest point total of the season and lost their fifth straight.
The rust from missing nine games was evident for Nowitzki, who played tentatively.
With 8:08 left in the third period and after getting called for a foul against Randolph, Nowitzki’s frustration spilled over. He took two quick technicals from official Eric Dalen and was ejected, finishing with seven points and five rebounds in 15 minutes.
Rockets rookie goes to hospital: Houston rookie Patrick Patterson was taken to Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital during the Rockets’ 112-106 victory over the Hawks on Saturday after experiencing chest pain and congestion. Coach Rick Adelman had no update on Patterson’s condition after the game. Team spokesman Bob Schranz said Patterson was experiencing flu-like symptoms before the game and that he was sent to the hospital to undergo more tests.
Fastbreaks: With seven players out, injury-riddled Cleve- land had only eight players available against Denver on Saturday. Coach Byron Scott said he’d never coached a game with so few players. LeBron James was out of Miami’s lineup against Chicago, missing his second straight game because of a sprained left ankle. Toronto Raptors guard Leandro Barbosa is expected to miss one to two weeks with a strained right hamstring. He was hurt Friday.
