Seattle Seahawks sign former University of Washington wide receiver Kevin Smith

The Seattle Seahawks signed former University of Washington wide receiver Kevin Smith on Wednesday.

The Seahawks are looking at Smith as a special teams player. He returned kicks and was on kick coverage units at Washington. In addition, he returned two punts during his four seasons with the Huskies.

Smith’s 25.9-yard average on kick returns in 2011 ranks seventh-best in Washington’s history for single-season kickoff return average.

After going unchosen in the NFL Draft in early May, Smith signed with the Arizona Cardinals, but he was waived June 4. The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed Smith off waivers, then released him June 19.

The 5-foot-11, 214-pound Smith is considered to have good speed, and he impressed at Washington’s Pro Day, which was heavily attended by Seahawks personnel.

Signing Smith pushes the Seahawks’ roster to the 90-player offseason limit.
