  • City resources were put to good use

Well done, Olympia! In briefly scanning comments to various news stories about the weather events of the past few days, it appears that there is an overwhelming amount of bellyaching that city government did not do enough, and more importantly, spent way too much money! Really?

  • School meal changes were long overdue

I was delighted to read the new United States Department of Agriculture guidelines requiring schools to serve meals with twice as many fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, less sodium and fat, and no meat for breakfast. The guidelines were mandated by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by President Barack Obama in December 2010, and will go into effect with the next school year.

  • Levy replaces an expiring one

During my many years as a broadcaster, I had an opportunity to visit virtually every school in the Olympia School District. I observed teachers and staff who were dedicated to providing the best education possible. I always came away with a sense of pride and a feeling that surely we have one of the best school systems in the nation. It’s one of the reasons people want to live here.

  • State shouldn’t govern marriage

Marriage is an institution of Jehovah for procreation. One man and one woman. They become one flesh.

  • Power crews were up to the task

  • Underground lines would cut outages

Now that the worst of this historic storm is over, I need to put into words what I believe would be a solution to most of the storm-related power outages.

  • Growth should pay for new schools

The Olympia School District is hoping the taxpayers will open their wallets and continue to subsidize growth by voting yes on the bond levy in February. I support the operation and maintenance levy but not the nearly $100 million bond that will include building a new middle school in southeast Olympia.

  • Lack of leaders hurts this country

This country’s problems are a direct result of a lack of leadership on the part of this president and the two parties that offer the American people nothing. Look at our current government, run by outdated old politicians that should have been sent into retirement a decade ago. In politics, being old doesn’t make one wiser, it means they become the party leaders and run Congress and this country into the ground.

  • Don’t forget victims of crime

Prosecutor Jon Tunheim makes excellent points regarding the root causes of crime. Yet we must be careful to avoid three errors: confusing mental illness with crime, forgetting personal responsibility, and forgetting victims.

  • Underground power would be better

The recent prolonged power outage is the direct result, not just of the latest snow and ice event, but of the long term failure to invest in a safer, more stable power delivery system. Knowing that weather events that trigger widespread power outages occur at least once almost every year, I don’t understand why we do not require all new power lines to be installed underground.
