Candidates: Gateway Rotary will host several candidates at upcoming meetings. Gateway Rotary meets at 7 a.m. on Wednesdays at O’Blarney’s Irish Pub, 4411 Martin Way E., in Olympia. Olympia City Council candidates Judy Bardin and Jessica Bateman are guests Oct. 21.
Actor BD Wong Opens SPSCC Artist & Lecture Series: South Puget Sound Community College opens its 2015-16 Artist & Lecture Series with award-winning actor BD Wong, at 7:30 p.m., at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts Mainstage, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia. Wong’s lecture, “All the World’s a Stage: From Exclusion to Inclusion,” traces his journey from rejection and self-hatred to embracing his multiple identities. Tickets are $10 for general admission, and the event is free to all SPSCC staff, faculty and students. Olympia Zine Fest: The inaugural Olympia Zine Fest bursts on the local culture scene with a panel discussion from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Olympia Timberland Library, 313 Eighth Ave. SE. A variety of events will follow throughout the weekend in downtown Olympia. The panelists for the discussion include V. Vale of RE/Search Publications, author Imogen Binnie and Milo Miller, founder of the Queer Zine Archive Project. They will discuss the ins-and-outs of independent publishing. The event takes place after regular library hours; no other services will be available. This event is part of Timberland Reads Together, a one book, one community reading program, and is free and open to the public. Information: 360-352-0595.

Washington State Archives Month: As part of a celebration, throughout October, the Washington State Archives and its Southwest Regional Branch in Olympia are hosting a free open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at 1129 Washington St. SE, in Olympia. Visitors can learn how to organize and maintain personal electronic records, discover what sorts of records can help with family history research, and see some amazing collections in the State Archives. State Archivist Steve Excell will be available to help visitors with family history research questions. Guided tours of the facility also will be given. Walking Tour: Quirky Tales, Colorful Residents and History Mysteries: State Capital Museum staff presents a history of the South Capitol neighborhood, followed by a walking tour. Lamplighter Tour: Hear tales of the past from Tenino and Bucoda with a tour of Forest Grove Cemetery, 18011 Northcraft Road SE, Tenino. Dessert and cider are included. The event is a fundraiser for Boy Scout Troop 14.

12th annual Denim & Diamonds: A fundraising event presented by the Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Fund, a chapter of Mason General Hospital Foundation, will be at 4 p.m. at the Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union. Tickets are $50 per person with all proceeds to benefit women in the community needing assistance to pay for the diagnoses and treatment of breast and cervical cancers.
