Bail set at $10,000 for Centralia man accused of throwing can at truck

May 6-A Centralia man faces felony charges after he allegedly threw a can at a passing truck Saturday.

Clarence J. Rodgers, 41, is charged with one count of second-degree malicious mischief, a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Rodgers made a preliminary appearance in Lewis County Superior Court on Monday. A judge set bail at $10,000 cash or bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a Chehalis police officer responded to the reported incident in the 2400 block of North National Avenue and spoke with the victim, who said he was "driving his truck southbound when a man standing in the shoulder threw a can at his vehicle."

The victim said the suspect was wearing a "red knit cap, a white or gray shirt, and shorts." He pointed out the dent and "chipped trim" caused by the can and said repairs would likely exceed $750.

Another witness reportedly corroborated the victim's account.

A second officer found the suspect "a short distance away and identified him as Clarence Rodgers," according to the affidavit.

Police arrested Rodgers and booked him into the Lewis County Jail at about noon Saturday.

According to the affidavit, Rodgers has prior felony convictions that include escape from community custody, second-degree identity theft, second-degree theft and second-degree burglary.

He is scheduled for an arraignment on Thursday, May 7.
