Thursday's Prep Roundup: Anacortes' Rowell wins second straight state 1,600 title
TACOMA - Anacortes High School senior Dylan Rowell won his second consecutive boys' 1,600-meter track and field title in a meet-record time Thursday at the Class 2A State Championships at Mount Tahoma High School.
Rowell finished in 4 minutes, 4.65 seconds to break the previous Class 2A state meet record of 4:08.89 run by Selah's Cooper Quigley in 2022.
Rowell's time was just off his previous best of 4:03.10 from the previous week. That time is a school record.
Rowell, currently ranked No. 6 in the nation in the event, claimed the state 2A title a year ago in 4:10.90.
Ignacio Lorens of Bainbridge Island finished second to Rowell on Thursday in 4:12.14.
Anacortes' Maverick Ball was third in 4:14.63 and Burlington-Edison's Caleb Hawkins was sixth in 4:15.52.
The Anacortes boys' team, the two-time defending state champion, leads the team standings after the first of three days.
Class 3A State Championships
TACOMA - Sedro-Woolley's Denver Hainstock placed sixth in the boys' javelin with a throw of 170 feet, 2 inches.
Mount Vernon's Mia Checketts finished 10th in the girls' 1,600 (5:08.36).
Class 2B State Championships
YAKIMA - La Conner's Flint Huizenga finished third in the boy's javelin (163-4) while La Conner's Isabelle Villard was 16th in the girls' shot put (30-5 3/4) at Zaepfel Stadium.
Mount Vernon Christian's Logan Mounts finished 11th in the triple jump (39-6) and teammate Noah Vander Kooy 12th in the triple jump (39-6).
Mount Vernon Christian's Della Carlson finished 13th in the girls' 1,600 (5:38.43).
