Vancouver shooting suspect held on $150,000 bail

A Vancouver man accused of shooting at two men outside of a downtown Plaid Pantry in October is being held on $150,000 bail in the Clark County Jail after his arrest in Multnomah County last month.

Matthew Cash, 26, appeared Thursday in Clark County Superior Court on allegations of first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and drive-by shooting. He also is accused of second- and fourth-degree assault domestic violence, second-degree assault and harassment/threat to kill for allegedly strangling his partner after a night of drinking in December. Cash failed to appear in court on those charges, so a warrant was issued.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeff McCarty requested a combined bail of $300,000, given Cash's past failure to appear in court and the violent nature of the allegations against him.

Judge Suzan Clark instead set a combined bail of $150,000 - $50,000 for the domestic violence assault allegations and $100,000 for the assault and drive-by-shooting allegations.

Cash's arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Court documents say Vancouver police responded to multiple reports of gunfire near Washington and West Sixth streets. Officers found three spent shell casings and talked with two men just getting off work at the Six Shooter bar at 611 Main St., according to the probable cause affidavit.

The men told police they and two bar bouncers kicked a man out of the bar around 1:45 a.m. for trying to sell cocaine to patrons.

After closing, the bar employees walked to Plaid Pantry to get drinks and found the man, later identified as Cash, parked on the south side of West Sixth Street in a black 2013 BMW 328 SD. They told police they confronted Cash and told him to "stop trying to sell drugs to people," and he responded by pulling out and racking a gun.

Cash mentioned an affiliation with the 49th Street Crips, an offshoot of the California-based street gang, during the scuffle, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Cash was able to get away and into his car. He then flipped a U-turn to head southbound on Washington Street and allegedly fired his gun three times toward the bouncers.

Cash was arrested on May 20 and booked into the Multnomah County Jail, where he was held until being transferred to the Clark County Jail on June 3, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and the Clark County Prosecutor's Office.
