WA state resources mobilized overnight for US 730 fire south of Wallula Junction
Evacuations were in place and residences and infrastructure were threatened by a fire burning at U.S. 730 south of Wallula Junction in Walla Walla County on Sunday, June 14, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
State assistance was mobilized at 12:45 a.m. to help contain the fire at the request of Walla Walla County Fire District 6 Chief Rusty Waite.
The U.S. 730 fire started on Saturday, June 13, at approximately 11 p.m. Burning in grass and brush, it was estimated at 300 acres and growing at about 3 a.m.
At that time, Level 1, "be ready," and Level 3, "go now," evacuations were in place, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
An update on evacuations was not immediately available Sunday at 9 a.m.
U.S. 730 was closed in both directions from the Washington-Oregon stateline to Wallula Junction, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The roadway was fully blocked by fire activity, WSDOT said.
The State Fire Marshal's Office said two wildland strike teams were called to help with containment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
