Seattle waterfront getting new multi-use trail for pedestrians, bikes
A new multi-use trail will fully open Tuesday along the Seattle waterfront.
The trail runs along the east side of Alaskan Way from near Pier 62 to Clay Street and replaces old trolley tracks and sidewalks with new plant beds with trees, shrubs and perennials; lighting and benches; and space for walkers, runners, bikers and more.
New maps and signs along the trail will point the way to the waterfront and nearby neighborhoods.
The project comes courtesy of Elliott Bay Connections, a public-private partnership focused on revitalizing public parks along the waterfront, but the space is owned by the city of Seattle.
The greenway and its maintenance and landscaping are funded by private donations from Melinda French Gates, MacKenzie Scott, the Diller-Von Furstenberg Family Foundation and Expedia Group.
A stretch of the new greenway opened on Friday between Blanchard Street and Wall Street to accommodate the first cruise-day detour of the Alaskan Way Safety Project, the city said. The multi-use trail also serves as a bike detour during cruise sailings.
Editor's note: The story has been updated to note other donors to the greenway project.
