Mariners' Cal Raleigh a late scratch with unknown injury; team awaiting MRI results
Ominous news came from the Mariners a half hour before what was supposed to be a cheerful evening surrounding Randy Johnson's number retirement.
Cal Raleigh went through medical imaging to diagnosis an apparent injury that kept him out of Saturday's lineup, though Mariners manager Dan Wilson declined several times postgame to provide any specifics on the status of his All-Star catcher.
Wilson is generally reluctant to discuss injuries and would only say Raleigh had general soreness.
The team is awaiting results of the MRI, Wilson said, and should know more Sunday.
Raleigh was a late scratch from the Mariners' lineup for Saturday's game against the Kansas City at T-Mobile Park.
The club did not provide a reason for Raleigh's status before the game, and by every indication Raleigh was not available to pinch hit in a demoralizing 3-2 loss to the Royals. Raleigh was not seen in the dugout during the game.
It is certainly noteworthy that a few minutes after Raleigh was formally scratched the Mariners called up veteran catcher Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma.
Pereda, 30, is the only other catcher on the Mariners' 40-man roster, other than Raleigh and Mitch Garver, who replaced Raleigh in Saturday's lineup.
In a corresponding roster move, infielder Will Wilson was placed on the injured list with a fractured left thumb.
