USMNT Star Could Miss World Cup Due to Injury

With only a few months left until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, every player wants to be present if given the opportunity.

Also, to have a real chance of lifting the most prestigious trophy in the history of this sport, every coach wants all of his players available.

However, as happens in a sport where the body is often pushed to the limit, many end up getting injured and missing the chance to play in the international tournament.

The USMNT does not seem to be having much luck, as another key piece of the squad has suffered a serious injury, complicating his participation in the World Cup.

USMNT Star Could Miss World Cup Due to Injury

The player in question is Johnny Cardoso, a midfielder for Atlético de Madrid and an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino's tactical setup.

The club reported on its website that the player did not finish the session and that the medical report confirms a severe sprain in his right ankle.

"He will receive physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and his return will depend on his recovery progress", the club added.

The Colchoneros also added that the player looked very affected after the injury, so his presence at the World Cup is doubtful. Furthermore, he will not play again this season with Atlético de Madrid.

With 23 appearances for the USMNT, he was on Mauricio Pochettino's list and, if he recovers, he will travel to the World Cup.

The 24-year-old midfielder, originally from New Jersey, arrived last summer from Real Betis for around 24 million euros and has played 30 matches with Atlético de Madrid.

It is a very hard blow for the former Tottenham Hotspur FC coach, since this would be the second player he could lose for the squad list, as happened with star striker Patrick Agyemang, who suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury.

Although there is still a possibility, as remote as it may be, that Johnny Cardoso recovers and makes the list for the competition.
