Rory McIlroy Isn't Happy With Course For 2026 PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy made the cut for the 2026 PGA Championship, but make no mistake, he's not having a great time at Aronimink Golf Club.
McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, shot a bogey-free 67 to secure a spot in the field this Saturday. Although he performed quite well on Friday, he unleashed a rant about the course setup at Aronimink.
"think a bunched leaderboard like this, I think it's a sign of a not-great setup... it hasn't really enabled anyone to separate themselves. It's easy to make a ton of pars...it feels like bogey's the worst score you're going to shoot on any one hole
Unsurprisingly, a handful of golf fans ripped McIlroy for those remarks. They thought he came off as a sore loser.
"Translation: I wasn't able to play this course everyday for a month like Augusta and I need to blame something," one fan said.
"I mean… isn't that proving the opposite? No one can separate. Course is hard. You better take your par and move on…," a second fan argued.
"He's a world record holder for crying all the time," another fan wrote on X.
Rory isn't the only star frustrated this weekend.
Although he wasn't as brutally honest as McIlroy, three-time Grand Slam champion Scottie Scheffler aired out his thoughts about the pin locations at Aronimink.
"This is the hardest set of pin locations that I've seen since I've been on Tour. And that includes U.S. Opens, that includes Oakmont. I did ask, I asked Fooch, who caddies for Justin Rose," said Scheffler, via Daily Express. "He's been around a long time -- and I asked Teddy too -- have you seen anything like this before? They said maybe Shinnecock is the only place they have seen that has pins that could compare to this. And like it's not as, how would you say, natural to the slopes that are there. There's a bit more, I think, that's manufactured into the greens, and it's just very difficult. There's also just some things that are out of your control. You just got to continue to try to hit good shots, and most of the pins today were, I mean, kind of absurd."
If McIlroy and Scheffler are both frustrated with Aronimink, that might give the PGA Tour something to think about after this event is over.
We'll see if either superstar overcomes their struggles and makes a charge on moving day.
