Isaiah Hartenstein's Play in Spurs-Thunder Game 2 Catches Fans' Attention

The Oklahoma City Thunder came into Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals needing a response, and they got one.

After dropping Game 1 at home, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder turned up the pressure on the San Antonio Spurs all night, forcing mistakes and pulling away for a 122-113 win on Wednesday. The series heads to San Antonio tied 1-1.

Isaiah Hartenstein did his part, finishing with 10 points and 13 rebounds while spending most of the night grinding against Victor Wembanyama in the paint. But when the final horn sounded, it wasn't just the win or the injury updates that had fans talking. It was Hartenstein.

Isaiah Hartenstein's Controversial Moment Against Stephon Castle

Late in the game, Hartenstein appeared to grab Stephon Castle by the dreads while play was still going. No foul was called. No review was triggered. The game just moved on, but the moment did not go unnoticed, and NBA fans made their feelings clear almost immediately.

"No foul for this?" one fan said.

"He tried to injure Spurs players multiple times this game," another fan stated.

"You can't beat them, so you gotta injure them," one fan noted.

"The ref looking right at pull!! " another commented.

"Entire OKC team has at least one weekly practice dedicated to getting away with dirty plays," one added.

"He's still mad from the poster he got on him earlier," another fan said.

That last comment points to something that happened earlier in the night. With 8:19 left in the second quarter and San Antonio trailing 43-39, Castle found a lane and exploded to the rim, throwing down a poster dunk directly over Hartenstein.

Whether frustration carried over into that later sequence is hard to say, but it's the kind of play that adds context to an already ugly moment. Even if the grab wasn't intentional, it's exactly the type of hand contact that officials typically call on the spot.

Had the referees seen intent in the action, the play could have been reviewed for a flagrant foul. Instead, it went uncalled and unreviewed. The NBA can still look at the play after the fact. Whether any further action comes from it remains to be seen.
