New Bo Bichette Report Opens Door to Blue Jays Reunion
When Bo Bichette left the Toronto Blue Jays in January 2026, it ended one of the most memorable tenures in recent franchise history.
The New York Mets signed the two-time All-Star to a three-year deal that included player options for 2027 and 2028, ending a seven-year run in Toronto that saw Bichette develop into one of baseball's premier offensive shortstops. He led the American League in hits in both 2021 and 2022, becoming the first player in Blue Jays history to accomplish that feat twice, and established himself as a cornerstone of the club's lineup.
His final season in Toronto was arguably the best of his career. Bichette hit .311 with 44 doubles, 18 home runs and 94 RBIs across 139 games in 2025, finishing among the league leaders in both batting average and doubles. He then elevated his game in October, helping power the Blue Jays to a World Series championship. Against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bichette hit .348 and delivered one of the most memorable moments of the series; a three-run go-ahead home run off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7.
However, the transition to New York has not gone according to plan. The Mets have sit last in the National League East, and Bichette's production has dipped significantly. Through 70 games, he is batting .236 with 66 hits, 8 homers, 40 RBIs and a .644 OPS.
Bo Bichette Expected to Opt Out of Mets Contract
Amid Bichette's struggles, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday that executives around the league expect him to opt out of the final two years of his contract after the 2026 season. The structure of the deal gives him that flexibility, and Nightengale reported that many around baseball believe he will take advantage of it and re-enter free agency.
Opting out makes him an unrestricted free agent and he can negotiate and sign with any MLB team. Since there are no MLB rules preventing a player from re-signing with a former team after opting out and becoming a free agent, this could mean a return to Toronto, the club that made Bichette one of baseball's most coveted hitters.

Bo Bichette is now expected to opt out of the remaining 2 years on his contract with the Mets following this season, per @BNightengalepic.twitter.com/Fb5tM1r5Xt
A move to the Blue Jays makes much sense. The club remains firmly in a competitive window, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk and Kazuma Okamoto forming the core of an offense expected to contend for years. Adding a motivated Bichette back into that group would immediately strengthen the lineup and provide stability at one of the game's most important positions.
As of this writing, there is no indication that Toronto and Bichette have discussed a reunion, and any potential return remains purely speculative. Financial considerations, roster construction and Bichette's performance over the remainder of the season could all play major roles in determining his future.
Still, Nightengale's report has reopened a conversation that seemed settled just a few months ago. For the first time since Bichette left town, the possibility of him wearing a Blue Jays uniform again no longer feels impossible.
