Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay Dealt Concerning News Before Saudi Arabia Game
Uruguay arrived at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with plenty of momentum behind them. Marcelo Bielsa has built a team that presses hard, defends with conviction and carries genuine dark horse status heading into the tournament.
The excitement around this squad is real. But right now, they can't even get into the country. According to The Independent, Uruguay's squad is stranded in Mexico ahead of their World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia on Monday.
The team had been based in Cancun for the final phase of preparations but ran into a travel disruption when their scheduled aircraft failed to receive clearance for the flight into the United States. The issue is tied to paperwork related to the plane itself, which blocked approval for the planned route.
As of now, players and staff are still at the Mayakoba Complex, roughly 45 minutes from Cancun International Airport, waiting on an alternative travel plan.
Bielsa was due to appear at a pre-match press conference at Miami Stadium at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, and at this point, that appearance looks increasingly unlikely.
Uruguay's World Cup Schedule and What's at Stake
The timing couldn't be worse. The tournament kicks off June 15, and Uruguay open against Saudi Arabia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
They return to the same venue on June 21 to face Cape Verde before wrapping up the group stage on June 26 against Spain at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. All three matches are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EST.
With both opening games at Hard Rock Stadium, Uruguay at least avoid early travel headaches once they land. But missing out on standard pre-match preparations, including time at the stadium, is far from ideal going into a World Cup opener.
Uruguay's Key Players to Watch
On the field, this team has the pieces to go deep. Federico Valverde is the engine of the side. The Real Madrid midfielder is 27 and at the peak of his game and Uruguay's attack runs through him more often than not.
Up front, Darwin Nunez shoulders the scoring load after Edinson Cavani's retirement. Bielsa's system is built around his pace and direct running in attacking spaces.
At the back, Santi Bueno and Jose Maria Gimenez anchor the defense, with Bueno emerging as a key figure in a unit built on physicality and structure.
If they can get there, Uruguay have the squad to make some noise. First, they just need to land.
