Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber Just Did Something MLB Hasn't Seen Since 1932

The Philadelphia Phillies just subjected the New York Mets to humiliation of the highest order at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

The Phillies won 15-3. With the win, Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez moved into second in MLB in wins (nine) and third in ERA (1.80). But the story was Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, who accounting for nine of Philadelphia’s runs.

Schwarber blasted three home runs, including two in the Phillies’ eight-run third inning, for his fifth three-homer game. Schwarber’s 28 home runs lead MLB this season.

According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs, Schwarber only trails Mookie Betts (6), Sammy Sosa (6), and Johnny Mize (6) for the most career games with three-plus home runs in MLB history.

Oh, by the way, Harper hit for the cycle: a 385-foot home run in the bottom of the first, a single and double in the bottom of the third, and a triple in the bottom of the fifth.

“With Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, the Phillies are the second team in MLB history with players with a cycle and 3+ homer game in the same game,” Langs posted on X.

New York Yankees teammates Lou Gehrig (ever heard of him?), who hit four home runs, and Tony Lazzeri are responsible for the only other occurrence in a game in Philadelphia, of all places, on June 3, 1932.

Phillies fans dreamt for times like these when the club fired manager Rob Thomson on April 28. At that time, the Phillies were an MLB-worst 9-19. Now, under interim manager (and baseball legend) Don Mattingly, the Phillies have completely turned things around to sit at 41-35.

More importantly, the Phillies are fun to watch again. It would have been a travesty for a roster this talented to go to waste for an entire season.

And then there are the Mets, continuing a disastrous season with a 34-42 record and even lower vibes.

The Mets and Phillies will reconvene for their series finale at 7:20 p.m. ET Sunday night, airing on NBC and Peacock.
