So, let me start out by saying that I am absolutely not a coffee connoisseur. For years, my daily morning coffee service consisted of microwaving a mug of water and stirring in a heaping spoon of instant coffee granules with a splash of cream. (Hey, it woke me up, and that was the important thing.) I have, however, always enjoyed a nice cup of espresso every once in a while — I’ve just never really had space in my kitchen for an espresso machine.

Then during Amazon Prime Day in 2024, I decided to disregard my limited kitchen counter space and treat myself to this Smeg espresso machine I’d had my eye on for a while because it was on sale for half off. And, while my wallet still took a minor hit, I have not once regretted my purchase.

Smeg Espresso Coffee Machine

First of all, this espresso machine is gorgeous. From its chic, retro-inspired design to its shiny chrome accents, this thing makes quite a statement. It’s available in four colors, including red (which is my favorite color, and the main reason I wanted it in the first place). The Smeg has a simple, user-friendly interface consisting of three buttons: single shot, double shot and steam. There’s also a power button near the base of the machine, along with a built-in steam wand on the side that you can use for milk-based drinks like cappuccinos and lattes.

This espresso machine comes with a portafilter (i.e., the thing that holds the espresso grounds) and three inserts for single shots, double shots and coffee pods. It also comes with a tamper that doubles as a measuring spoon, as well as a comprehensive user manual complete with operating instructions, care tips and troubleshooting solutions. The only things you’ll need to supply are your espresso cup, some coffee grounds and your own vessel for steaming milk, as those are not included.

To use the machine, you’ll first need to fill the reservoir (located on the back of the machine) with filtered water up to the “max” line. Then, plug it in and press the power button. The buttons at the top of the machine will illuminate and start flashing, and when the flashing stops, the machine is ready. To prepare your espresso, you’ll use the tamper/measuring spoon to measure out your coffee grounds and tamp them into the portafilter. Then, align the portafilter with the arrow on the group head and lock it into place. Press either the single-shot or double-shot button, and in roughly 30 seconds, you’ll have a piping-hot cup of espresso ready to enjoy.

One of my favorite things about this espresso machine — aside from how pretty it looks — is how easy it is to use. While it may not scratch the itches of the “coffee snobs” out there, it’s perfect for folks who want a simple cup of espresso with minimal fuss. The espresso comes out super smooth with the perfect amount of velvety crema on top, and it makes the perfect canvas for whipping up steamed milk beverages. I love making a double espresso in the morning to kick-start my workday — and on the weekends, I’ll add a mini-splash of Kahlua to make it even more of a treat.

Overall, I’m very happy with my Smeg espresso machine. At $500, it’s a bit of a splurge, but the good news is that you can occasionally find it on sale during events like Amazon Prime Day (and potentially Prime Big Deal Days, which takes place from Oct. 8-9). If you’re looking for a simple yet functional espresso machine that adds a pop of color and flair to your kitchen, it’s hard to do better than the Smeg.
