Apple AirPods have earned a reputation as great all-around earbuds, whether you’re looking for top-notch sound quality, a comfortable fit or overall durability. If you’re looking to purchase your first set of earbuds or level up from your current pair, now’s the perfect time to join team AirPod, as Apple’s new Apple AirPods 4 release hit stores Sept. 20. The latest generation in the AirPod family, these promise a more contoured fit, new wireless charging and much more. Let’s dig into what makes these new AirPods an improvement over older models.

Apple AirPods 4

The fourth-generation AirPods’ major draw is their brand-new noise cancellation system. These earbuds provide the best of both worlds: Their open design means you can stay connected to the outside world in case someone talks to you, but in noise cancellation mode, their built-in microphones analyze your environment and cut down on low-frequency ambient sounds, from the hum of an airplane cabin to traffic noise. And if you need to be more aware of outside noise, you can switch to Transparency (or hear-through) mode. Another major innovation is the AirPods’ Conversation Awareness feature, which automatically lowers the volume whenever you speak out loud.

The Apple Airpods 4 also improves on their predecessors’ already excellent sound, with a new low-distortion driver and improved high dynamic range amplifier supplying more impactful bass. The upgraded H2 chip improves voice call quality and powers a Siri Interactions feature, which makes accepting or declining incoming calls as simple as a nod or shake of the head, thanks to the earbuds’ built-in accelerometers. If you plan on taking your new Apple AirPods out to the Great Outdoors, you won’t have to worry about getting them damaged either; their rating of IP54 means they’re resistant to both dust and water, compared to the previous generation, which are only rated for water resistance. The earbuds have also undergone a subtle but effective physical makeover, with an updated contour that makes them more comfortable to wear over long periods of time.

The innovations of the Apple AirPods 4 aren’t limited to the earbuds alone. The charging case has also gotten an impressive makeover, with a new port for USB-C charging as well as compatibility with Apple’s puck for the Apple watch and Qi chargers for wireless charging. And if you happen to misplace the case, it’s easy to find using Apple’s Find My app; the case’s speaker emits a beep when you need to locate it.

The 4th generation Apple AirPods have already garnered some early rave reviews, with one Amazon customer noting that they’re “everything you always wished AirPods would be.” Other reviewers have praised the “fantastic” sound quality and the fact that they don’t slip out of your ears as easily as earlier generations. “I didn’t expect these to be so good,” said one customer. “By far the best Apple earbuds to date.”

At a price that’s comparable to previous AirPods, the Apple Airpods gen 4 are a great deal no matter how you slice it — especially with their new noise cancellation and conversation awareness features, improved sound quality, integration with Siri and other Apple devices, and better comfort and fit. If you’ve been waiting for the right do-it-all earbuds to come along, the Apple Airpods 4 are the ideal choice.
